Courtroom Art and Journalism Contests

Did You Know...

....You don't have to field a Mock Trial team to register students for the Art and Journalism contests

....Art and Journalism contestants travel to the courthouse at their assigned region to take on the role of courtroom artist OR courtroom photgrapher OR courtroom journalist (students choose the role, we provide the materials)

....There is NO preparation time required.  All entries are judged by a panel organized by the Mock Trial State Office in Raleigh

....We will return students' work if we are requested to.  Add to your portfolio and get involved!  To register for any of these 4 contests, email Liz Avery-Jones at liz@ncatl.org

Brief Decriptions: (for more detail, read Contest Rules below)

Feature Writing Competition
Students interview mock trial teams and cover a particular team's trial at competition. After the trial, entrants will have about two weeks to submit their story to the State Office.

News Writing Competition
Students observe a mock trial during Round I of competition and during Round II students will write "on deadline" in an assigned room. Stories will be collected at the end of Round II and submitted to the State Office for judging.

Photography Competition
Students submit one black and white photo that captures the spirit of competition. Although they watch a performance of the mock trial, contestants' entries can depict the action behind the scenes as well. Students' entries must be received by the State Office a few weeks after the Regional Competition.

Art Competition
At regional competition, students observe the morning trial rounds and make preliminary sketches. The contestants complete their work during the second round of trials. Students must bring their own pencil, pen and ink, and/or pastels. We provide the paper.  A panel of artists will judge the pieces and choose a Regional Champion. Champions have about four weeks to submit more detailed works, preferably paintings, which are judged for the State Finals contest.

Regional Artist Champions will receive a certificate and are automatically entered into the State Finals contest. At the State Finals banquet, State Champions and Runner Up awards are provided to the appropriate Feature Writing, News Writing, Art, and and Photography contestants.
